As i ran through Lalbagh Gardens, I simply had to stop near the glass palace to take in the heady floral smell along the way. It was the very fragrant flowers of the Michaelia champaka that were intoxicating me. I now understand the appeal of the 'Joy' perfume - made of 30 types of roses, michaelia varieties, jasmine and other flowers - an instant hit even at the time of the Great Depression of the 30s, despite its steep price.
The golden champa belongs to the Magnolia family.
